Spring 2008 “Truly it may be said that the outside of a mountain is good for the inside of a man.” ~George Wherry, Alpine Notes and the Climbing Foot, 1896 The hills really are alive with the” sound of music” this Spring… a wide spectrum of “instruments” create beautiful sounds here on the mountain. We have beautiful & varied bird songs as migratory flocks return and busily begin building their new nests and families. There is the re-birth of gorgeous wildflowers in the meadow and delicious morel mushrooms in the forest. The music of the growing rivers as the winter snows melt and the thrills of rafting and fishing begin in the pristine waters. And of course, there are the sounds of traditional music as our renowned Icicle Music Center www.icicle.org and Leavenworth Summer Theater www.leavenworthsummertheater.com begin their practices in anticipation of a wonderful summer season ahead. Late April through late May is the time to explore the forest floor in search of the delicious spring morel mushrooms. Looking forward to enjoying Chef Tom’s roasted Quincy asparagus with morels, shallots and herbs. The wildflowers and birds make their appearances daily with many new arrivals as the week’s progress. Spring beauty and avalanche lilies grace the meadow in April and early May; then in mid-May through mid-June there is the spectacular show of yellow balsam root, larkspur, lupine and finally our infamous Wenatchee checker mallow in late June. These are only a few of the beautiful flowers Nature sends our way in the Lodge meadow, let alone all the other species here and on the trails all around us in May, June and even into early July in the higher Alpine wilderness trails for hearty excursionists! The majestic elk has been spotted in the meadow already this season. The mountain is a hikers paradise this time of the year. May in the valley offers golfing, water water rafting and festivals such as the great Spring Bird Fest, May 16-18th. Check out all the wonderful events at www.leavenworthspringbirdfest.com. The Lodge is the proud sponsor of the beautiful Mountain Bluebird again this year. The village will celebrate Maifest May 9-11th as the valley comes alive with music and festivities after it’s winter slumber. June festivities include the fun Bavarian Bike & Brew www.dasradhaus.com and the Leavenworth Wine Walk www.visitwashingtonfarms.com, both on June 7th and the International Accordion Celebration June 19-21st. You can’t believe the songs played on the accordion! We hope you can plan a visit to the Lodge over the next few months to enjoy our Spring / early Summer and make a little music of your own enjoying the spectacular beauty of the Mountain and our quaint Bavarian village. Brad & Kathy
