Every poem begins in the body, which makes sense. We cannot lie to our own bodies; it knows what we are doing; it has mysteries we cannot see. A poem takes shape in the soul & eventually receives flesh when it’s out into the world. In this class we will explore various poetry techniques (the body of the poem), practice reading poems in an embodied way, and create poems with aspects of the body, movement, breath, and body-related poetry as our prompts. You will also learn about how to look at your body of poetry and prepare it for publication. All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Ages 16+

“Unplug” to reconnect with nature, family & friends! Leavenworth Unplugged, presented by Friends of Northwest Hatcheries and hosted by the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery is a series of casual social gatherings throughout the summer months on the beautiful Leavenworth Fish Hatchery property off of Icicle Road. Each event will feature a fun new conservation-focused goal/theme and activities for kids and adults. These events are meant to entice friends and families to spend more time outdoors together, unplugged from technology, to reconnect with nature and each other. The events will be held on the third Monday of May, June, July, and August from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Our proactive conservation-focused goal for the second event scheduled for Monday, June 17th is another Zero-Waste Dessert Potluck (since it went so well the first time!), followed by a Group Bike Ride around the hatchery property and the nature trails along the canal and Icicle River. For desserts, think “finger foods,” like brownies, cookies, bars, cake bites, etc., something that doesn’t require the use of utensils or plates or paper and doesn’t come in a bunch of wasteful packaging. Consider bringing your own reusable water bottle too, we’ll supply lemonade. Stay tuned to the Friends of NW Hatcheries Facebook page for details on future themes and activities for the other Leavenworth Unplugged evenings!

With just two voices and two guitars, the duo embraces a mutual love of the darker folk and country traditions, the very music they met and bonded over in the winter of 2016. They first performed together at a charity concert and they’ve been performing shows across the country ever since.

Location: Grunewald Guild; 19003 River Rd

Info: 509-763-3693

This class brings together the vibrant colors of silk painting, the beautiful flow of calligraphic marks and lettering, the expressive power of the chosen text, and the richness of the silk fabric itself. Laura writes, “Together we will read and meditate upon the words of such writers as Maya Angelou, Brené Brown, Mary Oliver, Jane Hirshfield, Elizabeth Alexander, Elizabeth Austen–words that awaken our spirit of creativity and possibility, and words which lament injustice and pain in this broken world. Students will practice calligraphic styles first working on paper and then moving to silk. We will then add luscious color and calligraphy to flowing silk scarves which can be worn or use the word-adorned silk to create banners to carry or display. Making physical the written words brings a powerful presence which adds strength, beauty, and grace to a world very much in need of all of these.” All experience levels welcome, including beginners.
